Building blocks for the chemical industry with biofuels as a by-product
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the production of biobased chemicals and materials is set to double over the next few years. The demand for biobased chemicals to replace existing chemicals (the majority of which are produced from petroleum) is rising steeply.
These findings can be found in the ‘Biobased Chemicals – Value Added Products from Biorefineries’ report, drawn up by the IEA Bioenergy - Task 42 Biorefinery. The global compilation and dissemination of knowledge in the area of biorefinery for Task42, in which 12 countries participate, is being run by Wageningen UR Food & Biobased Research.
